Almond against round
Eye aspect ratio compares the vertical opening of the palpebral fissure to its horizontal length. A low ratio produces a long, narrow, almond-shaped eye; a high ratio produces a rounder, more open one. The shape is set by the lid margins and the underlying orbital opening, and it changes with expression — a genuine smile compresses the lower lid and drops the ratio noticeably.
Reading a value that blinks
The app takes the height at the widest point of the opening and divides by the corner-to-corner width. Because blinking swings this value hard, the measurement is smoothed across frames rather than read from a single instant, and frames captured mid-blink are effectively discarded by that averaging. This is also why the metric is deliberately excluded from the symmetry calculation: lid position is too noisy to distinguish a real left-right difference from an ordinary blink.
A mid-weight metric that moves with your mood
The reference sits near 0.32 for men and 0.34 for women, reflecting a real difference in what reads as harmonious across sexes rather than a single unisex target. Seven per cent of the composite rests here, level with lip ratio. Scores drift low when the eye is narrow or heavily hooded and high when the eye is round or the lower lid sits low, and the metric is unusually sensitive to how relaxed your face is during the scan.

Scores pile up at the top of the range. Part of that is genuine — the accepted band is wide — but part is an artefact of how people scan: a relaxed, slightly under-open eye in front of a camera reads closer to the reference than the same eye does in conversation.
