What asymmetry looks like to an observer
Facial symmetry compares paired features across the face. Perfect symmetry does not occur naturally and is not the practical target; what the metric detects is the degree of mismatch, which observers register as a general impression well before they can identify which specific feature differs.
Why MogTracker never builds a midline
This is the most technically involved metric in the set, and the method matters. Most naive implementations pick a midline and measure each side against it, which fails because any error in placing the midline is applied to every paired feature at once. MogTracker instead compares distances between paired landmarks directly, never constructing a midline. It also uses horizontal distances only — vertical comparisons cannot distinguish genuine asymmetry from ordinary head roll — and applies a noise floor so that sub-pixel landmark jitter is not reported as real asymmetry.
Why your score beats what the mirror suggests
Eye height is deliberately excluded, because blinks and expression swamp any genuine left-right difference. Six per cent of the composite depends on it. Small asymmetries are universal; only substantial ones move the score, which is why most users see a high number here even when they can identify differences in the mirror.
How 123,813 people score on facial symmetry
Scores concentrate in the upper bands and the bottom band is nearly empty, which surprises people who expect symmetry to be where they lose points. Two design choices produce that: the noise floor discards sub-pixel landmark jitter that a naive implementation would report as asymmetry, and only horizontal distances are compared, so head roll cannot masquerade as a crooked face. What is left is genuine structural mismatch, and genuine structural mismatch is rarer than the mirror suggests.

The metric applies a noise floor and ignores vertical differences, which are dominated by head tilt rather than real asymmetry. It reports substantial structural mismatch, not every visible difference.
Does head tilt affect the symmetry score?
Far less than in a typical implementation. Only horizontal distances are compared, specifically so that head roll does not register as asymmetry — and the app enforces a roll limit before scoring regardless.
